Recently discovered in our quarry a most desirable coloured stone blocks of sedimentary or sandstone that will split occasionally that make perfect hearth stone pieces.  This stone has other decorative uses as well.  It is a Canadian product, produced in Canada, made in Canada by God.
The stone is a blue-ish grey colour and can be had in square-ish shapes from 1" thick to 4" thick and from one ft wide to 4 ft wide and length from 1 ft to 4ft and more.  We are not as lucky as some quarries in the world, they pick it up in slabs with a front end loader, we have to cut ours by hand and only an experienced stone mason splitting this stone has learnt where to strike and how hard to hit the chisel.  Even then, there is a ton of waste that don't cut right.
Obviously, a perfect large sheet is not cheap but we are comparable in price with other flat stone pieces shown in the Spring Cottage Life Magazine 2025.

Fireplace Mantles
Curly Maple, Cherry, Hard Maple
Barn Beam, Ancient Hand Hewn Beams
Mantles from $200.00 and up
Hard Rock Maple

These mantles are from 4' to 8' long with 4" to 8" face and a depth of 5" to 8" and sometimes larger. Except for the Hewn barn beams they are planed and sanded ready to go and oiled or varnished to bring out the colour. Barn beams are planed or oiled scent free.
You want your fireplace to be the main feature of your room, it has to be awesome and so does the mantle.  A plank or timber from out back won't do which will probably crack shrink and heaven forbid twist.
Our mantles are aged and air dried in a barn from 2 to 5 years so as for further shrinking and further cracking is at small minimum. Excessive cracked and twisted mantles are discarded.
The Curly Maple mantels are most cherished and obviously very expensive when you think of the multitude of thin panels that could be taken for musical instruments etc.  There are various degrees of quality which govern the cost.
Cherry is another exotic wood that could come from one of our mantles that has different degrees of quality.
Hard Rock Maple is a beautiful wood when finished and also has different types of beauty, we have them in spauled maple as well
